Origins of the Double Dutch Rope

Double Dutch found its origin in Chinese, Egyptian and Phoenician rope-makers, but the game actually got its name when the Englishmen came to settle near the Hudson River and saw the Dutch children playing with two jump ropes. What they saw, they named ‘Double Dutch.’

Double Dutch – Children and Competitions

When someone says ‘Double Dutch’ what comes to your mind? Do you picture little girls wearing joggers and doing fancy footwork? It is so popular now that many competitions are held, attended by participants from all over the world.

Double Dutch makes use of two jump ropes that are held at both ends by ‘spinners.’ The spinners’ job is to rotate one rope clockwise and the other anti-clockwise. To play Double Dutch, essentially you need at least three players – two spinners and one or more jumper. With more players it is a team game. The jumpers jump in turn by turn or together. They jump to jump rope songs. One such song is, ‘ice cream soda pop cherries on top, how many boyfriends have you got, A B C …’ and it goes on until someone misses

Double Dutch requires a lot of coordination, timing and precision. It’s a wonder that little kids can do it with such ease and perfection. When the rope is turning, jump in when the rope that is closest to you and hits the ground. You should be positioned near one spinner and face the other spinner. The spinners hold the rope at hip height and the two ropes are one shoulder distance apart. Now that you know the basics, you only need your friends to help you through the rest. Happy jumping!

Our research shows that few adults incorporate Double Dutch in their workouts. Here are some of the top reasons why:

  1. No friends who jump rope. That’s right! Few adults who have jump rope friends. Double Dutch requires three and most adults who workout with a jump rope often do it alone.
  2. Too complicated. Adult rope jumpers reports that Double Dutch looks hard to do and they don’t have friends to tech them.
  3. Not enough room. Children play Double Dutch in the playground, but adults commonly jump rope at home or a gym where there isn’t a lot of room.

Several jump ropes materials are used for Double Dutch with beaded ropes being the most recommended. Many children commonly play with either a heavy nylon or a light plastic rope. Beaded ropes are best for general purpose Double Dutch because they are easiest to see and to control. Beads are durable and easy to replace. Nylon ropes get frayed with time. Plastic ropes are fast and they bready more easily than beaded or nylon ropes

  1. Use a learning or general purpose use jump rope.
  2. A beaded jump rope with unbreakable, low density polyethylene beads that cover a high-strength braided cord.
  3. Speed jump rope.
  4. A lightweight plastic speed rope.
  5. Slow speed
  6. Nylon rope about half an inch in diameter.

Double Dutch Rope Length

Each rope should be about 16 feet long depending upon you style of jumping, height and the number of people jumping at the same time. Remember, you can always make the rope shorts, but you can’t make it longer!
